FEED THE TARPON
“Amazing,” “Breathtaking,” and “Impressive”
are words they often hear from first-time visitors. They’re referring to the school of more than 100 tarpons that come here daily and linger for hours at Robbie’s.
Occasionally, a tarpon actually rises up from the water in a powerful flash of silver and green to meet the fish as it leaves your hand. It’s a sight to behold!
Maybe the “Silver Kings” just come here to see the humans, but toss a bait fish among them, and the water churns as these monsters vie for the snack, causing quite the unforgettable spectacle.

Today, I want to share a fun and adventurous day, Day and I spent at Robbie’s Marina in the Florida Keys. On our way from Miami to Key West, we stopped at this quirky, vibrant spot and had a blast soaking in its Caribbean charm and hippie vibes.
Our adventure began with breakfast at Robbie’s. Walking in, we were instantly struck by the lively atmosphere. The place is decked out with dollar bills covering the walls, pillars, and ceilings, each one a testament to the countless travelers who’ve passed through. The decor is a mix of rugged motorcycle style and laid-back island flair, making it a feast for the eyes.
Robbie’s is famous for its tarpon feeding. For just $5, you can buy a bucket of fish to feed these enormous creatures. We made our way to the pier, where we were immediately greeted by a flock of pelicans eager to snatch our fish. Day found the whole scene thrilling yet a bit intimidating, especially since the tarpon were nearly as big as she is!
I decided to film the experience while feeding the tarpon. Moving to a quieter spot near the terrace, I balanced my phone in one hand and the fish in the other. Just as a tarpon leaped out of the water for the fish, another one mistook my phone for food and snatched it right out of my hand. In an instant, my phone was gone, sinking to the bottom of the marina.
The Phone Rescue
Panicked and in shock, I stared at the water where my phone had vanished. The staff at Robbie’s, accustomed to such mishaps, quickly came to our aid. One of the staff members even offered to dive in and retrieve my phone. She emerged a few minutes later with my phone in hand, to the applause of everyone around. Unfortunately, the phone was waterlogged and beyond saving.
Despite the phone incident, we didn’t let it ruin our day. We sat down for a delicious breakfast on the terrace and booked a snorkeling excursion for the afternoon. The sun was shining, and we had plenty of time to explore the island before our boat trip.
Day spent the morning collecting shells and crabs along the beach. We saw sand hares and various fish swimming near the shore, making it a delightful little adventure.
Snorkeling Adventure
In the afternoon, we boarded a boat and set out to snorkel. The underwater world was breathtaking, with vibrant coral reefs, turtles, and a multitude of fish. However, the presence of numerous jellyfish added an unexpected challenge. Despite a few stings, the beauty of the marine life made it all worthwhile.
Dining and Iguanas
After a memorable afternoon on the water, we returned to Robbie’s for dinner. Sitting on the terrace under the shade of a beautiful tree, Day suddenly exclaimed, “Look, Mom!” Under the table, a massive iguana was making its way around. It was fascinating to watch, especially when we noticed the tree next to us was full of iguanas, big and small, in a variety of colors.
Even though we lost a phone to the tarpon, our day at Robbie’s was filled with excitement and unforgettable experiences. From the lively breakfast to the snorkeling adventure and unexpected encounters with iguanas, it was a day we’ll always cherish.
If you’re planning a trip to the Key’s, be sure to stop at Robbie’s Marina. It’s a place full of surprises and adventure, perfect for anyone seeking a unique and memorable experience.
Hope this story inspires you to visit Robbie’s Marina and experience its charm firsthand. Happy travels, and may your adventures be just as thrilling!

MEET BARBARA WEINGARDT
Lets her art speak through acrylics. “I love painting animals. I identify with the animal kingdom much more than the human kingdom. I do a lot of commissions and dogs. Dogs are one of my favorite subjects.” She grew up in Brentwood, California, a Los Angeles suburb filled with Hollywood stars. Seeing Gregory Peck or Marilyn Monroe around the neighborhood was just another Tuesday. At church, Lawrence Welk passed around the collection plate. After leaving Southern California, she moved to Denver, Colorado, where she earned art degrees at the Colorado Women’s College and the University of Denver. Barbara had a jewelry design business there, too. Twenty-five years ago, she was lured to the Keys by the weather and fishing. In those first years, she “lived on her houseboat, like a gypsy. Best thing I ever did.” When she first visited Robbie’s, she painted the marina. She went on to paint the inside of the Hungry Tarpon, the outside of the restaurant, and then the bar. “Finally,” she said, “Michael asked if I wanted to come to the marina and sit and paint, and that’s what I’ve been doing for 25 years.” You can find Barbara at Robbie’s on weekdays and the occasional Saturday. “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t painting. I know it is a cliché, but it is not what I do but who I am. I have to be doing this, and I love it. It is there. It’s a gift, and I am very grateful. I am exclusive to Robbie’s, which is why I go by Barbara at Robbie’s. This is like my home.”
