Nestled in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, Durbuy is often touted as the smallest city in the world. With its charming medieval architecture, scenic landscapes, and rich history, Durbuy offers a unique and enchanting getaway.Durbuy

This weekend, Day and I are heading to Durbuy, a delightful little village with an English-France vibe nestled in the Ardennes. We’re planning a weekend of adventure, exploring the Han Caves, delving into the underground wonders, climbing rock faces, canoeing, hiking through the forests, and scaling treetops. And of cours wild barbecuing with marshmallows, yummy…;o)

Day In this blog, we’ll share all about Durbuy, the so-called smallest city in the world, where you can savor delicious Burgundy-style cuisine, stroll through charming little streets, and relax on cozy terraces. Join us and take a peek into the enchanting town of Durbuy!

Come on  Day take us away….

We stayed at a wonderfully cozy hotel  a element of (hotel Victoria) right in the heart of Durbuy’s tiny center. As we climbed the wide, creaky old  staircase, it felt like stepping back in time. But when the door to our room opened, we were greeted with a charming, snug space that even had a mezzanine for Day’s private loft above. The quaint windows, where we could sit and enjoy the view, added to the room’s charm. What more could you want?

The next morning, we enjoyed a delightful breakfast at Hotel Victoria, making plans for the day over a delicious cup of coffee. Once we had everything packed – camera, poncho & headlight for the caves, some towel and for the kayaking trip –waterproof backpack & some sweets, water bottle  and off course  waterproof phone pouch (because i know myself ;o) and we set off towards the caves.

Ready for a day of adventure, we were excited to explore the wonders that awaited us in Durbuy!

Durbuy is located in the province of Luxembourg in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. It is approximately 90 kilometers southeast of Brussels, making it a perfect day trip or weekend escape from the capital.

History and Origins
Durbuy’s origins date back to the Middle Ages, gaining city rights in 1331. Its strategic location along the Ourthe River contributed to its historical significance as a trading and administrative center. Despite its small size, Durbuy has preserved its medieval charm, with narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses, and a picturesque castle overlooking the town.

Is Durbuy The Smallest City in the World

While Durbuy is often celebrated as the “smallest city in the world,” this claim is more of a promotional slogan than an actual fact. Durbuy received its city rights in the Middle Ages, granting it the official status of a city despite its small size. This historical designation adds to its charm and appeal but does not mean that Durbuy is truly the smallest city in the world in terms of population or area.

There are other towns and cities worldwide that might contend for the title of the smallest city, depending on how one defines “city.” In some cases, places are considered cities due to historical or administrative reasons, even if they have a very small population.

So, while Durbuy is undoubtedly one of the smallest cities and offers a unique place to visit, the claim that it is the smallest city in the world is mainly a promotional statement.

And last bud not least,

Christmas in Durbuy

The Christmas market, held from late November to early January, features charming stalls selling crafts, gifts, and delicious food. The town is beautifully decorated with lights and festive decorations, creating a magical atmosphere.
